Lyne cc v Surbiton Conservatives

There is an expression in sport, “it was a bread and butter game”. On a hot Sunday afternoon at Lyne our members toiled without the presence of any of our leading players.
Plum Junior rose to the occasion with an honest spell of controlled swing bowling while veteran arm-turner Teale toiled away from an unusual end without complaint apart from when his numerous solo LBW appeals were refused.
Captain Pipe (I still cannot believe I am writing those words) rallied his troops by calling on Danny and Keith to carry on the fight. In the field Brian Bristow was making a good job of keeping wicket after a previous torrid afternoon with the gloves. All round Lyne players were fielding with discipline.
The Pipe Monster brought on Jess and Adam and was rewarded with honest endeavour from both.
Wickets fell and, on a day when 200 might have been expected Surbiton only reached 161 by tea.
Here, after so much good work, Lyne faced disappointment as the chairman had produced a bread and butter tea, which did little to raise spirits.
Lord Barry of the Bat opened with a flourish, which is no good against a straight yorker. Ian, our new exciting prospect carried the innings for a while. Brian and Jess looked like they might keep us in the game then, with 8 overs still to go they were both out to reveal the soft underbelly of our batting order.
It was not a pretty sight. They know who they are and the Yahoo is not the shot required.
So Lyne fell to the might of Surbiton. It was a bread and butter sort of game, but at Lyne we know there will be honey still for tea one day, when Smalls does it.
